About the event

On the first Sunday in September the Burston Strike School Rally commemorates the longest strike in history.

Diss Museum’s Basil Abbot will have a stall at the rally selling souvenir bottled beer. In collaboration with a local brewery we have created a Burston Strike Ale. A great souvenir at only £5 a bottle.

The Burston Strike School was at the centre of the longest running strike in British history, between 1914 and 1939.

On April 1st 1914 teachers Tom and Annie Higdon were dismissed from their posts in the Burston village. On that day the children marched around the village with cards hanging from their necks demanding that “We Want Our Teachers Back”.

Sixty-six of the local children had gone out on strike in support of their teachers, and the boycott of the local authority school lasted for the next twenty five years.
