First World War remembrance
A life-size silhouette statue of a soldier that took pride of place at First World War centenary events in Diss has finally taken up a permanent posting.
The 6ft figure was part of There But Not There, a national commemoration project led by former head of the army Lord Dannatt, who lives in Norfolk, that saw the sculptures at events across the country marking the 100th anniversary of the Great War armistice.
Purchased by Diss Waveney Rotary Club the ‘Tommy’ was part of the Armistice service at St Mary’s Church on November 11 and at the Rotary club’s special memorial concert.
However efforts to find him a permanent home had floundered after efforts to have him stand near the Morrison’s roundabout fell foul of bureaucracy about underground services.
Now he has been put on permanent parade after being donated to Diss Museum. He was unveiled at 11.30 am on Saturday March 16.
